The Science

The Science

Hydrogen is the simplest, lightest element in the universe. It is made up of a one proton and one electron. Because of its simplicity, it is believed by some that hydrogen is the root of  all elements.

alt

Hydrogen being 14 times lighter than air, when Hydrogen Fuel is released into the atmosphere, it dissipates upwards immediately. This means that a hydrogen gas spill won't pool on the ground, pollute ground water, or soak into clothing - it simply dissipates itself naturally into the atmosphere. Hydrogen is everywhere, it is the most abundant element in the universe, making up more than 90% of all matter.

It is the third most abundant element in the Earth's surface, found in water (H20) and all organic matter. In its normal gaseous state, hydrogen is colourless, odourless, tasteless, and is non-toxic, which makes it different from every other common fuel used today.

What Happens When Hydrogen Burns?

Hydrogen burns readily in the presence of oxygen, releasing considerable energy as heat and producing only water as an exhaust emission.

When hydrogen burns in air (which is mostly nitrogen), some oxides of nitrogen (NOx, contributors to smog and acid rain) can be formed, but much fewer pollutants are formed than when normal hydrocarbon fuels such as petrol and diesel are burned. This is because no carbon is involved, using hydrogen fuel does not contribute to global warming.

Hydrogen Gas has a higher flashpoint than petrol. The self-ignition temperature of hydrogen is 550 degrees Celsius. Gasoline varies from 228-501 degrees Celsius, depending on the grade.

When ignited, hydrogen burns upward, and is quickly consumed. By contrast, materials such as petrol and diesel vapours remain a flammable threat for much longer.

Hydrogen is a non-toxic, naturally occurring element in the atmosphere. By comparison, all petroleum fuels are asphyxiates, and are poisonous to humans.

Hydrogen combustion produces only water. When hydrogen is burned in oxygen, only pure water H20 is produced. In any case, when hydrogen is used in an engine, it actually cleans the ambient air by completing combustion of the unburned hydrocarbons that surround it. Compared with the toxic compounds (carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, and hydrogen sulphide) produced by burning petroleum fuels, the effects of hydrogen combusting are by far tremendously safer.

Discover how you can improve the efficiency of your current engine using a supplemental hydrogen generator.
Hydrogen makes an excellent fuel because it works well as an energy carrier. In fact, hydrogen is so effective at carrying energy that it has been used to power the rockets that are sent into space by NASA since the 1940.

If hydrogen fuel can power a rocket all the way into space, it is definitely a powerful energy carrier.  Harnessing that energy would create a powerful fuel source.
